Position Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Controller to serve as the primary internal accounting lead for the company.
This role is responsible for overseeing financial operations, cash management, and compliance, while also handling day-to-day accounting activities in a small company environment. The Controller will work closely with leadership to provide financial insight and support informed decision-making.
You will also partner with an outsourced bookkeeping team responsible for month-end close and financial statement preparation, ensuring accuracy, resolving issues, and maintaining strong financial controls.
This role is ideal for someone who is comfortable balancing financial oversight with hands-on execution and wants to have a direct impact on company performance.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight & Reporting
- Review monthly financial statements for accuracy and alignment prior to leadership review
- Monitor company cash flow, banking activity, and financial obligations
- Maintain oversight of job costing and construction financial processes
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
- Provide financial insights to support operational and strategic decision-making
Accounting Operations
- Manage day-to-day accounting activities, including accounts payable, reconciliations, and financial tracking
- Oversee accounts receivable, including billing coordination, collections, and aging
- Ensure accurate and timely processing of vendor payments and customer receipts
Construction Accounting
- Maintain and oversee job costing processes
- Ensure proper handling of lien waivers, Notice to Owners (NTOs), and subcontractor compliance documentation
- Partner with project managers to improve financial visibility and job performance
Compliance & Administration
- Coordinate audits, insurance reporting, and regulatory filings
- Oversee sales tax reporting and compliance requirements
- Maintain company licenses, registrations, and financial documentation
- Support year-end processes with external CPA
Process Improvement & Coordination
- Work closely with outsourced bookkeeping partner to support month-end close
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and internal controls
- Serve as the primary accounting liaison between leadership, project teams, vendors, and external partners
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of accounting experience (construction industry strongly preferred)
- Strong understanding of job costing, cash flow management, and financial reporting
- Experience working in a small or mid-sized company environment
- Comfortable being hands-on with day-to-day accounting responsibilities
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in Excel and accounting software
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a team
